Chapter Twenty-One
~
P enny dropped onto her bed, glad the day was over. Winter’s Day was spent doing rounds then feasting at the dining hall, although it was modest for a Winter’s Day feast. She poured herself into her studies. Both of her friends had left her alone.
Penny?
Jack Winder had called. It had been weeks since their last communication. They were all short. She was tempted to put up her shield, but decided it was Winter’s Day, so why not?
I’m in bed about ready to close my eyes. How is Deep Mist?
Deeper and deeper, Jack said. I’m learning spells I didn’t know existed. Nothing major. Teleportation, telepathy, and making objects of power are ones I had already mastered before I came. I’m learning a lot about swordsmanship. It is highly regarded in Masukai. I think I might surprise you when we see each other again.
I’m getting a little training in myself. Nothing as intense as what you are doing, but I don’t have much time. I had to do rounds today. Winter’s Day.
Jack paused. Masukaians don’t celebrate Winter’s Day. Their festivals aren’t centered on celestial events like ours. There is a harvest festival, a moon festival every month, so I guess that is celestial; sometime in the early spring, there is a day for celebrating ancestors and another festival day for their two gods, Akorra and Zukori. The families in Deep Mist celebrate, but the students just work all day, every day.
I feel so sorry for you, Penny said. Just think how focused you will be.
I could use a little unfocus time, but that rarely happens. I just wanted to see if you are well on Winter’s Day.
I am, Penny said. Goodnight.
Night! That’s right. It is still daytime here. I keep forgetting, don’t I?
“You do. Enjoy the rest of your day, Penny said, closing off their communication.
A smile came to Penny’s lips. She needed a little comfort after a day of hard work when everyone else was celebrating. Peer didn’t even show up for rounds, but it didn’t matter, not now. Life was a little better with Jack’s appearance, however brief. Even if she was building a false Jack in her mind behind all their months of communications, it was the pleasantest of diversions. She decided that diversions wouldn’t make her strong. Her communications with Jack had to be minimized so she wouldn’t fall so easily into thinking Jack had changed so much.
She turned over and, feeling a bit less put upon, easily went to sleep.
~
A few weeks after the second term started, Willet Barton summoned Penny to his office before she could begin practicing with Gary Green.
“Sera isn’t here yet,” Penny said to Willet.
“I know. I sent a message that she wouldn’t be needed today. It’s you I want to talk about. Sit down.”
Penny wondered what was wrong. Had her time ended with Sera? She didn’t need to train when all Sera and she did was go out and observe targets from time to time, so perhaps the training would end.
